TV/Movie Recs from the Peanut Gallery, Vol. 7

If you get a TV or movie rec from the Peanut Gallery, you know it's good.

The Peanut Gallery always has your back when we give you our TV and movie recommendations. Here are the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth versions of our TV/movie rec series. Our seventh installment brings the heat once again.

Enjoy.

Steve's Recommendation: In Bruges

Martin McDonagh (Seven Psychopaths) has written a lot of great films, but my favorite, which he also directed, is In Bruges. Starring Colin Farrell (The Penguin) and Brendan Gleeson (28 Days Later) as two assassins who have been sent to Bruges by their boss after a colossal mess up. It’s a witty and funny dark comedy and the locale is just beautiful. This film made me fall in love with Clemence Poesy (Tenet) who plays the love interest-slash-local drug dealer who lights up the screen whenever she is on it. Her and Farrell, along with Farrell and Gleeson, work so well together. It’s only icing on the cake when Ralph Fiennes (The Menu), the boss, shows up and we get this violent, but funny, climactic chase through the small, crowded streets of Bruges.

Available to stream, just have to pay for it.

Josh's Recommendation: The Shadow Strays

The Night Comes for Us writer/director Timo Tjahjanto once again delivers the blood-soaked goods in a Netflix action extravaganza that doubles down on everything fighting related. The choreography for the chaotic combat is the real star in the two-and-a-half-hour thrill ride that, quite literally, pulls no punches. Sit back, relax, and watch a lot, and I mean A LOT, of people get smacked.

Stream The Shadow Strays on Netflix.

Matt's Recommendation: V/H/S/Beyond

I'm a huge fan of the anthology series which has been running for over a decade now! The last installment fell a little flat for me, but V/H/S/Beyond, which sprinkles in a little more sci-fi into its scares, has returned the series to its original form. Beyond features five harrowing stories with a sixth acting as an interlude between each one. Two of them are excellent and you'll find yourself tensed up a bit. Justin Long directs a segment which is very reminiscent of the movie Tusk he starred in. Overall, we're treated to some good scares, which is perfect for this time of the year. I would also like to add it has a pretty solid Metacritic score on IMDb, which surprised me more than Seattle passing at the goal line instead of running it with Marshawn.

You can stream V/H/S/Beyond for a price, or watch it with your AMC+ subscription.

Sheehan's Recommendation: Sugar

Baseball is the best genre for sports movie. Yeah, I said it. Perhaps that's an argument for another time and another article. Anyway, my recommendation is Sugar, which follows a young, talented Dominican pitcher as he begins his professional baseball journey in a strange place filled with strange people and customs, to him. I can't say I've walked in the protagonist's shoes, but as someone who's played professional baseball, I have seen his shoes, so to speak. This movie is deadly accurate when it comes to the experience of foreign ballplayers; the good and the bad. It also has excellent choreography, since many of the actors played ball. Always a plus.

You can stream Sugar on Max.
