The Peanut Gallery Reviews Harriet

PG Score: 5.5/10

Harriet was disappointing overall. For a movie revolving around such a heroic figure of our nation, it just felt flat. Cynthia Erivo was severely lackluster and really didn't do such a legendary individual the justice she deserves. Her performance felt hollow, just not enough emotion or power behind her lines. I was hopeful after she was cast to play the titular character, so I was surprised by the result. The pacing is all over the place. It never really ratchets up enough tension, which seems virtually impossible given who and what the movie is about. It seemed as though the filmmakers were just checking off boxes of events in Harriet Tubman's life to get through. It dragged and was even downright boring at points. There were a few scenes that successfully captured some emotional oomph, but for the most part, this is a mediocre attempt at best. I was very excited for this one, but was unfortunately let down on a large scale. I can't wholeheartedly recommend Harriet.
