The Peanut Gallery Reviews Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine has everything that makes the MCU great.

Deadpool & Wolverine is the perfect popcorn film

Deadpool & Wolverine was released in theaters on 7/26/24

People say that Marvel has lost steam ever since Endgame, forgetting that No Way Home, Shang Chi, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and a few of the Disney+ shows have been outstanding. At worst, I would say the MCU has been inconsistent, but that’s neither here nor there. Deadpool & Wolverine is everything you could want from two of Fox Marvel's greatest assets. I may have tired on the fact that Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) got way too much attention in the X-Men films especially with so many characters available. I held a little bit of a grudge after Fox made such a badass character like Cyclops into an emo character. The last three or four outings for Hugh Jackman (The Prestige), however, have knocked it out of the park.

Though this Wolverine isn’t one we have met before, we feel his pain and anger and so does Deadpool and everyone else who comes across his path. If this happens to truly be Jackman’s last performance as the Wolverine then it was a noteworthy one.

No Disney Filter

Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy) returns as the merc with the mouth and Disney did nothing to tone down Deadpool’s loquacious lambasting of everyone he interacts with, friend or foe. There isn’t much of an evolution to his character, but like most of us, he is searching for a greater purpose after having taken a beating from life. He’s hilarious and completely inappropriate and his use of body language is second to none when conveying whatever over-the-top thing crosses his mind.

The MCU Sweetspot

Deadpool & Wolverine has everything that makes the MCU great. Funny, action-packed with great stunts and amazing fights, cameos that serve a purpose and pay homage to some of Fox Marvel’s other properties, and one hell of a soundtrack lead this to being the blockbuster of the summer. Trust me, it’s going to make bank and Hugh Jackman will never be able to retire; just ask Deadpool. There is an underlying heart to all the dick and anal-probing jokes that move the story along with a central purpose. Both of our lead characters have failed at being heroes and this is their last chance to get it right. Throw in the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and anything can happen.

Not Perfect, But A Load of Fun

Deadpool & Wolverine wasn’t without its flaws. It’s weird to see it, but there were moments where the CGI didn’t quite mesh with the rest of the scene. But the biggest nitpicking issue would have to be the story. The whole premise seems a bit contrived just so we can force the team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine...but who cares?! The fun begins once we get those two together.

I had a whole lot of fun watching Deadpool & Wolverine. The runtime flies by and when the credits roll all I want is a few more minutes to hang out with these characters. I not only recommend you go see this movie, I say go see it two or three times (like I plan to). You’ll laugh throughout and get all the bloodthirsty violence you could ever ask for. Definitely a popcorn flick if there ever was one. Oh, and did I mention the soundtrack? It’s a banger filled with nostalgic tunes.

PG Score: 8/10
