Nutshell Review: E1 of The Penguin

PG Score: 8.5/10

The Penguin is off to an excellent start.

The Penguin is available for streaming on Max.

The Penguin delivers the best premiere I’ve seen in a long time. Gritty and compelling, the kickoff for the 8-part miniseries gives Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb the well-deserved spotlight to work his magic. My guy is at the top of his game here. He is such a great actor.

A Weekly Tradition in the Making

This is not a superhero show. It’s a violent crime drama filled with flawed characters, including the city of Gotham itself. It is appropriately dark and looks like it’s only going to get darker. I’m here for it. My biggest complaint is that we have to wait 10 days for the next The Penguin episode since it’s switching to a Sunday evening weekly release schedule going forward. Needless to say, I highly recommend channeling the titular villain (or possibly antihero?) and waddling over to this banger after seeing The Batman (2022).
