A Quiet Place: Day One was released in theaters on 6/27/24
The third installment in the franchise but the first chronologically, unless you count the first 20 minutes of the second film, A Quiet Place: Day One brings a fresh story with lots of jump scares along the way. This time around, instead of a quiet town, the story takes place in the vibrant and extremely loud New York City. This is the first time John Krasinski (The Office) isn't directing, nor is his talented wife, Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow) starring.
New Heroes
A fresh take for the franchise, the film stars Lupita Nyong'o (Us) as Samira and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Eric. With a movie like this, a lot more is asked of the actors and everyone delivers. Limited dialogue leaves a lot of the emotions to be in the actors' facial expressions and Nyong'o delivers an especially solid performance. She and Quinn have excellent chemistry as they navigate the dangerous and turbulent city that is torn asunder by these dangerous aliens.
Thought-Provoking
The film asks a lot of important questions when faced with, seemingly, the end of the world. How do you survive? How do you adapt? Most importantly, how far would you go to get a slice of pizza? A unique take this time around is that, while everyone is trying to find a way to survive, Samira (Nyong'o) is a terminally-ill patient trying to accomplish something of personal importance while dealing with the fallout.
Mostly Good
There are some awesome and big-budget moments, but the excitement is limited, slowing the film down at points. The jump scares are a bit too predictable and sometimes the background characters make really dumb decisions that lead to their doom.
A solid installment to the franchise, A Quiet Place: Day One doesn't have the uniqueness of the first film, but is able to stand on its own two feet. Well-acted and with some excellent special effects, Day One is definitely worth a trip to the theater to be enjoyed on the big screen.
