Matt Reeves' The Batman will have several unique traits to keep an eye on.
The Batman will open in theaters on 3/4/22
1. Three Hours Long
Holy runtime, Batman! It is official. The Batman will clock in at a staggering 2 hours and 55 minutes. Some movies can justify this kind of length, while others overstay their welcome. Pacing will be a key factor to monitor when the latest version of the vengeful vigilante hits the big screen next month.
2. Does Pattinson Have What It Takes?
An ever-dwindling number of numbskulls refuse to look beyond his Twilight days. The rest of us got the memo a long time ago: Robert Pattinson is a great actor. Following the misleading launch to his career, he has exhibited exceptional range in films like The Lighthouse and Good Time. It will be interesting to see how the accomplished actor stacks up against those who wore the suit before him. The man is a thoroughly dedicated performer, and, if the trailers are any indication, the Wayne legacy is in capable hands.
3. Colin Farrell as The Penguin
Farrell’s attachment to the role of Oswald Cobblepot comes as a genuine surprise. The actor’s unrecognizable transformation into the deranged mobster is one for the ages, and the character will surely test the limits of his range. His performance has clearly generated plenty of confidence behind the scenes as HBO Max has already green-lit The Penguin’s own spin-off series.
4. This Could Be the Grimmest Live-Action Batman Yet
The Dark Knight just got darker. While Christopher Nolan’s trilogy was certainly harsh, all signs point to the new movie being an even more violent interpretation of The Caped Crusader and his foes. How far will co-writer/director Matt Reeves push the PG-13 envelope?
5. How Different Will Reeves’ Gotham Be?
With so many superhero films following such a similar trajectory, it is refreshing to have hope that The Batman will go against the grain. Between the unexpected casting decisions and edgier tone, Reeves seems to be willing to take risks. How his fearless vision will bleed into the cesspool of Gotham should be a treat to watch.
